Google's Chrome 76, now in beta, will block Flash by default; a Google employee claims Chrome 76 will prevent sites from detecting users in Incognito Mode

Following version 75's release on Android, Mac, Windows, and Linux last week, the next beta release of Google's browser is rolling out.

This beta is the endgame of a phase-out Google telegraphed years ago: the plan to kill background Flash content and make HTML5 the default was announced in August 2016 (announced in 2016), and Chrome 55's December 2016 rollout already defaulted central content to HTML5 while exempting top sites. Chrome 76 removes the remaining carve-outs for most pages.

The second change is newer territory: after sites began probing whether visitors were in Incognito Mode — often to hard-block metered articles — a Google employee says version 76 closes that loophole, making private browsing private again against fingerprinting scripts.

First-order effects

  • Sites still serving Flash content now see it blocked unless the user re-enables it per-site, forcing last-holdout publishers and internal web apps onto HTML5 immediately.
