The off-route alert is the latest entry in a long pattern: Google keeps shipping India-first Maps features rather than treating the country as a downstream market. It built an AI model specifically for Indian roads to handle flyovers and narrow streets, and earlier rolled out ML-powered Address Descriptors across 75+ cities because formal addressing is unreliable there. A Hindi support page indicates this feature is being rolled out experimentally, with no global announcement yet.

The notification mechanic itself is also proven Google territory — Maps has long pushed get-off alerts for public transit riders, and it has embedded ride-hailing booking inside the app since 2017. What is new is the target: instead of helping riders navigate, Maps is now monitoring the driver, turning the app into a passive safety witness for taxi and ride-hail trips.

  • Riders taking taxis or booked rides in India get an automatic alert the moment their vehicle deviates 500 meters from the Maps route, giving them a signal to question the driver or share their location mid-trip rather than after.
