Apple debuts Sign In with Apple service, which masks info like email addresses, for iOS and non-iOS apps and web; mandatory for iOS apps using 3rd-party logins

the project I loved and led at Mozilla 6-8 years ago, the project that broke my heart. This is my take, I'm sure it's incomplete. @fastcompany : Apple has been jousting with Facebook and Google over privacy. At WWDC, it did its talking through a major new feature that could hurt its rivals. https://www.fastcompany.com/ ... Gabriel Weinberg / @yegg : Especially excited for Apple's new private sign-in service. It helps plug a huge privacy hole in an elegant way. And not only is it more private: it also should make the often frustrating process of signing up for new apps faster, which benefits app developers as well as users. https://twitter.com/... Dare Obasanjo / @carnage4life : Apple is fighting a multi-front war against Android + Google while press laps up privacy talk • Sign in with Apple ads another point of lock-in • Fake email address limits remarketing ads • Cookie changes in Safari reduces ability to correlate ad clicks to user purchases Parker / @pt : The Apple login thing is very interesting. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the harm to ad sellers (particularly big ones, but littles will work around) is overrated & lock-in is underrated. Once you don't own/know the email you're using to log in on sites, Apple owns you. Mustapha Hamoui / @beirutspring : This will solve the identity layer, but not the friends network layer. Apps like @anghami use Facebook to find your friends and follow them in addition to signing in. They will be ill served by making the “sign in with apple” option mandatory https://www.zdnet.com/... v @techmeme Dare Obasanjo / @carnage4life : The fact Apple can wake up one morning & require apps like Spotify to support “Sign in with Apple” or they'll reject their app is greeted as some sort of consumer centric heroics from a near $1 trillion company is why I can't take tech pundits seriously Walt Mossberg / @waltmossberg : I can't see how Apple can make anything mandatory across the web. But the ad tech industry is a toxic spill that has polluted the entire web and app business. It is the cause of the rampant surveillance online. It should be exterminated. (Not ads, but ad tech.) So Im for this. Privacy Matters / @privacymatters : One must ask why it is not as simple to examine iOS apps to learn abiur embedded trackers as it is for Android apps using tools such as @ExodusPrivacy for example. https://twitter.com/... Dare Obasanjo / @carnage4life : Informative thread about Mozilla's failed attempt to build an anonymous single sign on solution. Key challenges were lack of cross browser support & sites wanting detailed user info not just fake email address. Sign in with Apple solves both of these by being a required option. https://twitter.com/... Joseph Perri Albanese / @josephpalbanese : This is crazy. Apple is about to flip off the entire ad tech industry. https://twitter.com/... Casey Newton / @caseynewton : even if it's just required on iOS apps, that could have huge ramifications. and seems like a strange time to launch a feature dependent on the App Store monopoly at a time of dawning antitrust regulation! Hugo Visser / @botteaap : If Google would _require_ Google login for all Android apps, hell would break loose. Even though you can login with Google without sharing email at all and just use it for oauth scopes. Forcing Apple Login on devs has nothing to do with privacy. It's about getting marketshare. https://twitter.com/... Tom Warren / @tomwarren : Apple is truly a services company now. It's introducing “sign in with Apple” for iOS apps, and you can hide your email address from developers with a unique random address that forwards to your actual email address. pic.twitter.com/EJ2NAstRTc
