Opera to add support for Tron's TRX and TRC-standard tokens in its browser-based crypto wallet, available on Android, Mac, Windows, Linux, and on iOS in beta

Opera is working to integrate support for Tron's TRX and TRC-standard tokens in its browser-based crypto wallet.

CoinDesk Yogita Khatri

Context & Ripple Effects

Opera has been building this wallet incrementally: a private beta of a built-in Android crypto wallet arrived in mid-2018, followed by a public Android release with an Ethereum wallet and dApp access, and then a desktop wallet whose keys and transactions sync between PC and mobile just weeks ago. Until now that wallet was an Ethereum-only affair.

Adding Tron's TRX and TRC-standard tokens turns Opera's browser wallet into a multi-chain product across every major desktop and mobile platform — a meaningful step beyond the Ethereum-based tokens, collectibles, and DApps it first tested, and a template the company would later extend with dedicated Crypto Browser builds.

First-order effects

  • Tron holders gain native wallet support inside a mainstream browser on Android, Mac, Windows, and Linux, no extension install required — directly expanding where TRX and TRC tokens can be held and spent.

Second-order effects

  • Tron's dApp and token ecosystem gets a new distribution surface inside Opera's browser, while rival wallets and browser-extension competitors face pressure to match built-in, cross-platform, multi-chain access without add-ons.

Third-order effects

  • If browsers keep absorbing wallet functionality, chain-support breadth becomes a competitive axis for browser makers themselves, positioning the browser — not standalone wallet apps — as consumers' default gateway to crypto assets and dApps.

The trend: Browsers are consolidating into built-in, multi-chain crypto wallets, with each new chain integration widening their role as the default access layer for tokens and dApps.
