Oversharing's two-year study of 40 Washington, DC drivers lands in a decade-long research thread on Uber's informational asymmetry. Earlier work found the passenger app doesn't reliably show where drivers actually are, likely a side-effect of supply forecasting [[a:831409]], and an undercover-driving reporter netted just $9.34 an hour after a 13-minute orientation [[a:829117]]. The new finding inverts the lens: even the people earning the money can't reconstruct it.

That matters because prior research already showed Uber's base-fare hikes and cuts barely move long-term driver earnings [[a:924019]] — meaning frequent rule changes churn the system without benefiting the drivers subject to it.

First-order effects

  • DC drivers in the study cannot verify what they earn per hour because Uber keeps rewriting fares, commissions, and bonuses faster than they can recalibrate — pay becomes something to trust rather than check.

  • Drivers fall back on collective sense-making: online forums where ride-hail workers compare notes and reverse-engineer pay structures [[a:925710]] become de facto auditing infrastructure the platforms don't control.

Third-order effects

  • Opaque, unilaterally adjustable pay feeds the policy backlash already visible elsewhere — Uber blaming California's driver price-naming and destination-preview rules for hurting its business [[a:964953]], and the NYC lockouts investigation showing how much money algorithmic control of driver availability saves platforms [[a:877214]]. If the pattern holds, earnings transparency moves from driver grievance to regulatory requirement.

The trend: Gig-platform pay is becoming algorithmically managed and increasingly illegible to the workers it pays, converting driver confusion into a core battleground for gig-economy regulation.
