Google set the low-light benchmark in late 2018 when it pushed Night Sight to Pixel owners as a pure software update, extending the lead Pixels had held since the Galaxy S9+ versus Pixel 2 XL comparison. Huawei had already been closing on that territory — its P20 Pro was called out for an exceptional low-light rear camera a year earlier.

The new head-to-head flips the script: the P30 Pro now preserves far more detail than a Pixel 3 running Night Sight, meaning Huawei's hardware-first approach has overtaken Google's software-only one at the exact task Google defined. It sets up the question the fall flagships would have to answer.
