Apple News+ could accelerate the demise of news outlets by decimating their revenue and disrupting publishers' relationships with readers

At the mercy of a new algorithm  —  Apple doesn't care about news, it cares about recurring revenue.  That's why publishers are crazy to jump into bed with Apple News+. Tweets: @brianstelter , @johnwilson , @joshconstine , @joshconstine , @joshconstine , @joshconstine , @jandersonqz , @joshconstine , @joshconstine , @joshconstine , and @trippmickle Tweets: Brian Stelter / @brianstelter : WSJ internal memo says Apple News+ users will only get a “curated collection of general interest news.” To access biz reporting, you'll still have to subscribe to the WSJ. Memo says “our collaboration with Apple will also extend to areas like video, voice, market data and AI.” John S. Wilson / @johnwilson : So, because the news industry has failed to properly monetize, abused ad targeting and tracking, and largely failed to prove their value proposition to readers Apple should not offer a subscription model that solved most of these pain points? Absurd. http://twitter.com/... Josh Constine / @joshconstine : Apple News+ puts publishers at the mercy of a new algorithm that can change at any time. Pubs have no control over visibility that determines their payouts. Apple even recommends competitors on their articles (seen here) 4/ http://twitter.com/... Josh Constine / @joshconstine : 'Why should I pay for X if I already subscribe to Apple News+?" should haunt every journalist's nightmares. Each deal struck with the devil makes him stronger. 6/ http://twitter.com/... Josh Constine / @joshconstine : Apple News wasn't even built for news! It acquired magazine app Texture and crammed in newspapers, which are demoted to the bottom like WSJ here. Good luck getting eyeballs. 5/ http://twitter.com/... Josh Constine / @joshconstine : Publishers learned too late that Facebook didn't care about cancelling their traffic. They must resist Apple News+ before it cancels their revenue. Here's my full report on why: http://techcrunch.com/... 7/ Jenny Anderson / @jandersonqz : Tech doesn't give a shit about news. They care about revenue. Which is a problem for news organisations. The danger of ‘I already pay for Apple News+’ - TechCrunch http://techcrunch.com/... Josh Constine / @joshconstine : Apple News destroys the need to pay individual news outlets. Why pay WSJ $30 when Apple gives you most of it for $10 & pays WSJ a tiny fraction. This “good enough” strategy is how Instagram Stories destroyed Snapchat's growth. 2/ http://twitter.com/... Josh Constine / @joshconstine : Apple News+ severs the reader/publisher relationship. Publishers-Don't get email addresses, CC numbers, bio data-Can't freely promote conference tix, newsletters, merch, other posts-Have no easily accessible homepage that becomes a habit. 3/ http://twitter.com/... Josh Constine / @joshconstine : This is my feature story on how Apple News could screw up journalism's revenue like Facebook did to its traffic. Here's why to be worried: 1/ http://techcrunch.com/... Tripp Mickle / @trippmickle : Details on the Apple News+ and WSJ partnership: The Apple app will surface stories for general readers (national news, politics, sports and some biz). Up to 3 days of biz and financial news will be searchable within the app, reports @lalpert1. http://www.wsj.com/...
