Google is testing shoppable sponsored ads within image search results that highlight products available for sale, with details like prices and brands

Google is borrowing a few cues from Instagram and Pinterest to encourage more shopping in its search results.

Engadget Jon Fingas

Context & Ripple Effects

This test is one stop in a decade-long arc of Google converting image search from a discovery surface into a commerce surface. It began when Google brought shopping ads into image searches explicitly to fend off Amazon, then extended the format with a mobile Shop the Look pilot via partners like LIKEtoKNOW.it, Polyvore, and Curalate.

The pattern has since compounded: Google expanded Shop the Look into complementary-product displays and personalization in 2022, its AI Mode now promises "a relevant set of shoppable options" for vague image queries, and by early 2026 advertisers were told they could buy items from Etsy and Wayfair directly within Gemini. The 2019 sponsored-image test is the bridge between ad formats and that end-state.

First-order effects

  • Advertisers gain a new sponsored placement where product imagery carries price and brand inline, letting Google monetize commercial-intent queries at the moment of visual discovery rather than after a text query.
  • Shoppers searching images see purchasable products surfaced directly in results, shortening the path from inspiration to product detail without leaving Google.

Second-order effects

  • Pinterest and Instagram, whose visual-shopping formats Google is openly borrowing from, face a rival that owns the default search entry point and can attach sponsored inventory to any image query.
  • Merchants' product feeds — prices, brands, availability — become more valuable as bidding inventory across more result types, raising the stakes of feed quality and pricing accuracy for anyone selling through Google.

Third-order effects

  • If the trajectory holds, the search results page keeps dissolving into a transactable layer: what started as sponsored images matures into checkout inside Search's AI Mode and Gemini, moving Google's shopping economics from selling clicks to hosting transactions.
  • That shift pressures the affiliate-and-redirect model of visual commerce platforms, since Google can internalize the full purchase loop that partners like Polyvore and Curalate once intermediated.

The trend: Visual search is being rebuilt as a direct transaction layer, with Google progressing from sponsored image ads toward purchases completed inside its own AI surfaces.
