Google makes over a dozen announcements for Google Assistant at CES, including Google Assistant Connect for third-party developers and flight check-ins

Today, Google is showing off auto-translation on smart display speakers, letting you naturally talk to each other with the speaker acting as the translator automatically.

This CES batch is the latest step in Google's push to make Assistant a platform rather than a phone feature. Back in 2017 it opened development to Spanish, Italian, and other languages to widen the builder base; in 2018 it demoed Duplex calling; and the day before this announcement it debuted Interpreter Mode on smart displays and speakers.

The new pieces extend that arc in two directions at once: Google Assistant Connect lets third-party developers embed Assistant into their own hardware, while flight check-ins and auto-translation push Assistant into travel scenarios where a screen-first interface breaks down. It matters because embedding plus translation turns Assistant from an app you open into infrastructure other products ship with.
