This closes a loop that opened four years earlier, when sources reported Microsoft building a lightweight in-house browser codenamed Spartan for Windows 10 — the project that became Edge and its proprietary EdgeHTML engine. Days after this report, Microsoft confirmed it would rebuild Edge on Google's open-source Chromium project and ship it beyond Windows 10 to macOS, Windows 7, and Windows 8.
