Google's October debut of the Pixel Slate positioned it as a premium Chrome OS tablet starting at $599, but the reviews that followed found the hardware outrunning the software: solid speakers and display, yet Chrome OS riddled with bugs and Android apps behaving like phone software stretched onto a laptop-oriented system.

This is a repeat failure mode for Google. Back in 2016, its Pixel C firmware update patched device-specific touch and UI problems while reviewers concluded Android itself was unsatisfying as a tablet OS — two different operating systems, same core problem that neither was designed for the tablet form factor.

  • Buyers paying $599 and up for the Pixel Slate get a device whose headline feature — running Android apps on Chrome OS — is the buggiest part of it, undermining Google's pitch that one OS can span laptop and tablet.
