Project Fi has been building out its software layer since Google launched it in 2015 as a $20/month-plus-$10/GB MVNO running on Sprint and T-Mobile, then widened the underlying network with a U.S. Cellular coverage partnership and VoLTE tests. Today's update pushes further in the same direction: an optional always-on VPN encrypting subscriber traffic, plus switching between WiFi and cellular driven by signal strength rather than simple availability.

The timing matters because it lands two weeks before Google's rebrand of Project Fi to Google Fi and its opening to iPhones and most Android devices — the service is being repositioned from a Nexus-owner experiment into a mainstream offering, and these features are part of that pitch.

First-order effects

  • Fi subscribers can now route all traffic through Google's VPN by default, extending encryption beyond public WiFi to cellular connections.
  • Subscribers moving between networks keep sessions alive more reliably, since handoffs now key off measured signal strength instead of dropping only when WiFi fails outright.

  • Sprint, T-Mobile, and U.S. Cellular become still more interchangeable pipes behind Fi: as Google differentiates on switching intelligence and privacy rather than radio access, the carrier partners' leverage over the service's value proposition erodes further.

  • If the pattern holds, MVNO competition shifts from network coverage — which resellers rent anyway — to the client-side software experience, making the phone's connectivity stack the real product.
