Facebook quietly begins testing Messenger Lite for iOS, which is only 10MB, starting in Turkey

Context & Ripple Effects

Messenger Lite began life as an Android-only product for slow connections, launching in Kenya, Tunisia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Venezuela in 2016, and by late 2017 Facebook had brought it to the US, Canada, UK, and Ireland while explicitly declaring no plans for an iOS version. Testing a 10MB iOS build in Turkey therefore marks a quiet reversal of that stated position.

The choice of market is not random: just days earlier, Facebook had quietly launched its Facebook Lite app on iOS in Turkey, making the country the company's live laboratory for bringing both Lite products to iPhone users at once.

First-order effects

  • Turkish iPhone users gain a messaging option roughly an order of magnitude smaller than the full Messenger app, aimed at constrained storage and slower networks.
  • Facebook formally abandons its 2017 position that Messenger Lite was Android-only, putting the two flagship apps on parallel Lite tracks in the same market.

Second-order effects

  • If the Turkey test performs like Facebook Lite's earlier trajectory — which grew from 100M users in March 2016 to 200M by early 2017 before expanding into developed markets — expect Messenger Lite for iOS to follow the same developing-to-developed-market ladder.
  • A successful 10MB iOS client puts pressure on Facebook's mainline Messenger team to justify the full app's footprint, foreshadowing the kind of size-focused rework that later produced a rewrite shrinking the iOS app from 130MB to 30MB (Fast Company's account of the Messenger rebuild).

Third-order effects

  • Lite stops being an emerging-market afterthought and becomes a reusable template Facebook can port across apps and platforms, with Turkey serving as the proving ground for whether low-footprint clients work on iOS, not just Android.
  • If the pattern holds, app size itself becomes a competitive axis for messaging apps in bandwidth- and storage-constrained markets, forcing rivals to maintain slim variants alongside their flagship clients.

The trend: Facebook is converting its 'Lite' playbook from an Android-only tool for emerging markets into a cross-platform product strategy, tested market-by-market starting with Turkey.
