Amazon launches Alexa skill connections in preview, a new tool enabling devs to use features from other Alexa apps, limited to printing and reservations for now

Amazon has spent 2018 patching Alexa's biggest weakness — that users can't find or reach the skills developers built. In June it began testing a discovery interface where developers declare what questions their skill can answer, and this week's skill connections preview attacks the problem from the other side: instead of hoping users find a skill, one skill can now invoke another's features directly, starting narrowly with printing and reservations.

The narrow scope is the tell — Amazon is validating the plumbing before opening it up, following the same playbook as the Music Skill API, which gave developers a sanctioned way to pipe third-party content through Echo devices. By mid-2019 the company made skill connections generally available, confirming the preview graduated into core infrastructure.

  • Developers building printing and reservation skills no longer need to duplicate each other's functionality — a reservation skill can hand off to a printing skill through Amazon's connection layer rather than rebuilding it.
