Android is the obvious choice for Windows users now  —  Microsoft unveiled a bunch of Surface hardware during a press event in New York City last night.

This is the latest move in a strategy Microsoft has been assembling since 2015, when it shipped the Phone Companion app to sync smartphones with Windows 10 PCs and floated running Android apps natively on Windows. By Build 2017 the company had stopped pretending it would win mobile outright, instead extending Windows experiences onto iOS and Android.

The May 2018 Your Phone app was the infrastructure for that pivot; app mirroring, unveiled alongside new Surface hardware in New York, is the payoff — putting actual Android screens inside Windows rather than just notifications and photos.
