Before this move, Wi-Fi generations were known only by their IEEE designations — 802.11n, 802.11ac — which the CNET quiz framing makes the point of: most buyers cannot rank them. The Wi-Fi Alliance's fix is to map each standard to a simple number, with the then-upcoming 802.11ax branded Wi-Fi 6 so the naming scheme launches alongside a new generation rather than retrofitting one.
