Amazon introduces Wi-Fi Simple Setup to automatically share a user's home wireless network credentials with compatible smart home devices

This is the third step in Amazon's campaign to own the moment a smart home device joins the network. The Smart Home Skill API in 2016 made Alexa the remote-control layer; Wi-Fi Simple Setup now removes the last manual chore — typing the Wi-Fi password into each new gadget — by letting compatible devices pull credentials straight from Echo hardware already on the network.

First-order effects

  • Device makers who adopt the program can ship products that connect during setup without any credential entry, and Amazon gains a new certification gate: compatibility with its routers and Echo speakers becomes the path of least resistance into the home.

  • Rival ecosystems are pushed to match zero-touch provisioning or lose the setup battle at retail, and the move sets up Amazon's later acquisition of mesh WiFi maker eero, which puts the credentials themselves inside an Amazon-owned router rather than just an Amazon speaker.
