Google is considering big changes to how URLs are displayed in Chrome so that web identity can be better understandable, plans to share ideas by next spring

This 2018 report is the opening move in a long arc of Chrome stripping meaning out of the address bar. The same year, Chrome 69 shipped a revamped omnibox that surfaces Google-sourced answers directly in the URL field, already blurring the line between navigation and search.

Five years later the logic played out: because nearly all phishing sites now use HTTPS, Google moved to retire the padlock icon that once signified secure identity, planning to replace it with a variant of the tune icon instead. The spring-2018 promise to share URL-display ideas was the first public signal that Google considered raw URLs a failed trust interface.
