This is the payoff of a three-year build-out. Apple started by getting hospitals onto its HealthKit platform in 2015, then spent 2017 laying groundwork to make the iPhone a records hub through talks with the Argonaut Project and Carin Alliance plus lab-data integrations via Health Gorilla. The feature shipped to users in iOS 11.3 in January, and Apple opened it up by shipping a Health Records API to developers in June.

The jump from 12 to 75+ institutions in months signals that hospital adoption stopped being the bottleneck — and the open-standards approach is what makes third-party apps able to consume records from multiple hospitals at once, which is the actual product.
