Google Maps is rolling out a feature that shows the battery level of a device used when it is sharing location

Google has gone through several version of location sharing over the years, all the way back to Google Latitude.  That feature was inside Maps, but then location sharing moved to Google+.

Google has been rebuilding location sharing inside Maps since it relaunched the capability there in March 2017, letting users share with friends and family on an ongoing basis or for a set period — a homecoming of sorts, since the original ongoing location-sharing feature revived ideas last seen when Google Latitude lived inside Maps before the function migrated to Google+. The battery-level indicator is a small patch on that foundation: it answers the most common ambiguity in shared-location products, whether a contact who has gone dark chose to stop sharing or simply ran out of power.

The move also fits a longer pattern in the coverage: Google keeps extending where live location appears, from Maps to real-time location sharing in Google Messages announced years later, treating presence data as a cross-app surface rather than a single-feature toggle.

  • Users receiving a shared location can now distinguish 'stopped sharing' from 'phone died', which changes how they interpret a missing pin mid-coordination — no behavior change required from the person being tracked.
