This closes a gap YouTube opened years earlier: in 2015 it made vertical videos play properly in full screen on Android, and its 2017 app redesign doubled down on mobile-first playback with new gestures. The desktop web player, meanwhile, kept letterboxing anything that wasn't 16:9.
