Google's Phone app for Pixel and Nexus devices can now automatically filter calls that it detects to be spam and will send them directly to voicemail

This is the second step in a progression Google started two years earlier, when the Phone app began warning Nexus users about incoming spam calls when caller ID was enabled. The 2018 update changes the default behavior from passive alerting to action: detected spam is no longer flagged for the user to decline, it is routed to voicemail without ringing.

The move also lands just months before Google ships Call Screen on the Pixel 3, its robot call screener that answers unknown callers, showing the company building out a layered defense where the Phone app itself becomes the filter point rather than the carrier or a third-party app.
