Google's Phone app has been creeping up the intervention ladder since 2016, when an update merely warned Nexus and Android One users about incoming spam calls when caller ID was on. This change crosses a line: instead of flagging a suspected robocall and leaving the decision to the user, the app now silently routes detected spam straight to voicemail on Pixel and Nexus devices.

That matters because it makes Google's own dialer — not the carrier — the first line of defense against unwanted calls, a position the company built on with the Call Screen robot answering feature on Pixel 3 months later.

First-order effects

  • Pixel and Nexus owners stop seeing spam calls ring at all — detected callers go directly to voicemail without user action.
