Google announces Cloud Filestore, a new cloud storage option for developers needing a traditional file system interface, launching in beta next month

Google's cloud storage lineup has been built around interfaces that required developers to adapt: object storage like the low-cost Nearline service for cold data, document databases such as Cloud Firestore, and collaboration-oriented sharing via Team Drives. What it lacked was a managed network file system — the interface most existing enterprise applications already speak.

Amazon filled that gap back in 2015 when it announced Elastic File System for EC2 machines. Cloud Filestore is Google's answer, arriving roughly three years later and aimed at developers who want to run traditional file-based workloads on Google Cloud without rewriting them against an object API.

  • Developers with legacy applications that depend on a conventional file system can now run them on Google Cloud Platform as-is, instead of re-architecting around object storage or keeping those workloads on-premises.
