The groundwork was laid in February, when Hunt released the Pwned Passwords API so third parties could check credentials against leaked data without exposing them — 1Password was among its first adopters. In May, Okta shipped PassProtect, a Chrome extension built on the same database, showing vendors were already racing to embed it.
