Visual Search is not Bing's first move on mobile imagery: back in 2015 its Android and iOS apps added smart suggestion bubbles for refining image searches, and Microsoft even beat Google's Now on Tap to screen-aware results on Android. The new launch extends that lineage from static images to live object recognition, putting a direct Google Lens competitor in Bing's iOS and Android apps.

The timing matters because mobile is where Bing has been weakest against Google, and the same apps would later become the delivery vehicle for something bigger — the chatbot-equipped Bing and Edge apps of 2023. Visual Search is an early step in turning those apps from keyword boxes into multimodal entry points.
