This MacRumors beta report is the first sighting of what became one of Apple's most consequential anti-forensics moves. Weeks later, Apple confirmed to the New York Times that an upcoming update would cut Lightning data transfer after an hour of inactivity, explicitly closing the loophole police tools were using to crack iPhones.

By July, the feature shipped as USB Restricted Mode in iOS 11.4.1 — and researchers had already found that plugging in a compatible USB accessory could keep the port alive past the lockout, setting up the cat-and-mouse that has defined this feature since.
