Facebook says it plans to make an “unsend” feature available to all users in a few months, won't unsend or retract any more of Zuckerberg's messages until then

TechCrunch reported last night that Facebook retracted Facebook messages sent by Mark Zuckerberg and other executives from their recipients' inboxes.

Mark Zuckerberg has special Facebook privacy features you don't: He can send messages that delete themselves from recipients' inboxes after a certain period of time. The second-class system you use does not offer that, but they say that's changing http://www.buzzfeed.com/...

    They were beta-testing this for 4 years? #bullshit http://twitter.com/...

I love Facebook's reaction to this story about executives being able to delete FB messages they've sent. “We're giving everyone this ability soon!” They are truly cowed in the current news cycle. http://techcrunch.com/...

Facebook secretly deleted Mark Zuckerberg's messages from recipient's Messenger inboxes and now it's on full PR damage control after being caught with its hand in the cookie jar. Embarrassing https://www.theverge.com/... pic.twitter.com/c4R2ICKaBK

Literally a day after Facebook brags about using threat models to prevent shipping features that can be abused they announce “gas lighting messages” as a feature because their CEO already has that power. ‍ http://twitter.com/...

To be clear: message retention policies are a real thing and important for various reasons. But Facebook's version is quite different in that it removes messages from *your* inbox. That breaches a communication contract with the other party. You should have to disclose that!

Update: @facebook acts like secretly deleting Zuckerberg messages from recipients' inboxes was just a beta test for a new feature — one that was only announced after the secret deletions came to light. I'm sticking with iMessage and SMS for anything important. https://twitter.com…

“There appears to be no ‘retention period’ for normal users' messages... That indicates Zuckerberg and other executives [receive] special treatment in being able to pull back previously sent messages.” http://techcrunch.com/...

Excellent work from Josh digging this up and reporting it, leading FB to try to figure out how to fix it. Makes you wonder what wd have happened if it hadn't been brought to light. FB has a fundamental disregard of privacy and data protection when it comes to its users. http://tw…

Journalists are responsible for an increasing proportion of Facebook's product roadmap. (Good work, Constine) http://twitter.com/...

Facebook now says it will launch an “Unsend” feature for all users, and won't let more of Zuckerberg's messages be unsent until it rolls out http://techcrunch.com/... http://twitter.com/...
