Wikimedia says it was unaware of YouTube's plans to use Wikipedia content next to conspiracy videos, amid concerns it could increase article vandalism

Well, this is awkward  —  At SXSW yesterday, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki announced that the platform would start adding information …

Also! @YouTube should probably run some A/B tests with the crew at @WikiResearch first. Does linking result in increased traffic? Increased vandalism? It's not polite to treat Wikipedia like an endlessly renewable resource with infinite free labor; what's the impact?

It would have been polite for YouTube to let Wikipedia know that it (YouTube) was going to rely (misguidedly IMO) on Wikipedia content to combat conspiracy theories on YouTube. But no advance notice. http://twitter.com/... http://twitter.com/...

So it seems YouTube didn't actually give Wikipedia a heads' up that hordes of conspiracy theorists are now incentivized to flood their articles with Alterative Facts. http://twitter.com/...

You may have heard that @YouTube is going to start linking videos about conspiracies to @Wikipedia articles. Here's our statement about this, and a few words about how Wikipedia works. http://twitter.com/...

...huh. 1) ok, seems fine. Hope they credit us appropriately 2) I don't think YouTube can rely on our irregularly updated *encyclopedia* to solve its ranking algorithm/hate speech issue; ppl don't read refs. 3) web 2.0 is wierd, man. /goes back to working on Wikipedia articles ht…

it is pretty wild how little communication went into the YouTube/Wikipedia thing (from YTs end). This exchange over Twitter is very telling (the language issue is...a big deal!) pic.twitter.com/DydjdoKUOb

Ps hopefully this won't lead to a bunch of ppl trying to “fix” the Wikipedia articles, which are clearly wrong, the video told them so. Sigh.

To underline this: This wasn't an idea YouTube's CEO floated up, spur of the moment. This was a planned announcement, time to SXSW talk, with PR folks prepped with graphics, etc. http://twitter.com/...

It's been a day and I'm still kind of awed by YouTube's plan to give the fever swamps a link to Wikipedia and say “Your problem now, bitch.” http://www.buzzfeed.com/...

Wikipedia is not a valid source Susan. http://www.theverge.com/...

Right, because @Wikipedia is an unimpeachable arbiter of truth. http://www.buzzfeed.com/...
