Snapchat now lets users add GIF stickers to their posts via Giphy and rolls out tabs on Friends and Discover sections to help organize and follow Stories

Snapchat is bringing one of the best recent features of Instagram Stories to its own app, with the ability to add GIF stickers from Giphy to your posts.

TechCrunch Darrell Etherington

Context & Ripple Effects

Snapchat is adopting the same playbook it watched Instagram run a month earlier, when Instagram partnered with GIPHY to bring GIF stickers into Stories. The move extends a long line of Snap embellishment features — from letting users decorate Discover clips with text and drawings in 2015 to pinning emoji onto moving video objects — now upgraded to licensed third-party content.

The second half of the update, tabs for organizing and following Stories in Friends and Discover, addresses discovery rather than creation, suggesting Snap is trying to make its Story inventory navigable as volume grows.

First-order effects

  • Snapchat users gain Giphy's full GIF sticker library inside posts, closing the feature gap with Instagram Stories that opened when Instagram shipped the same integration in January 2018.
  • Giphy's catalog is now embedded in both major Story platforms simultaneously, making it the default visual-content supplier regardless of which app a user posts in.

Second-order effects

  • Giphy's leverage grows as a cross-platform dependency: every social app that wants GIF stickers must license from it, turning a consumer app into infrastructure that competitors share.
  • The Friends and Discover tabs put pressure on rival apps to invest in Story organization tools, since raw chronological feeds become harder to browse as creator output scales.

Third-order effects

  • If every platform keeps sourcing stickers from one library, control of expressive content shifts from the networks to the supplier — a structural position later echoed when Twitter pushed its own tweets into Snaps as stickers via cross-platform sticker integrations.
  • Feature parity between Snapchat and Instagram Stories pushes both toward differentiation through organization and monetization layers rather than creative tools alone.

The trend: Social platforms are converging on identical creative toolkits sourced from shared third-party libraries like Giphy, shifting competition from features to distribution and monetization.
