The reliability push has been building for years: back in 2015 Apple framed iOS 9 and OS X 10.11 as a 'quality'-focused cycle with smaller apps and legacy-device support, and two weeks before this report sources said Apple was delaying planned iOS updates, including core-app improvements, to concentrate on performance. What changes now is that this stops being a one-cycle correction and becomes stated strategy — features slip to the following year rather than shipping unfinished on the annual clock.

That strategy was stress-tested publicly: after a swarm of bugs marred the iOS 13 debut, Apple overhauled its testing process so daily builds disable unfinished features by default, and in late 2023 it paused work on iOS 18, macOS 15, iPadOS 18, and watchOS 11 outright to fix bugs before resuming. The through-line is a company repeatedly paying schedule costs to protect software quality on devices it can no longer afford to ship broken.
