Advertisers can promote Tweets that aren't linked to any Twitter profile, allowing fake organizations to run policy ads while obscuring their bankrollers
A few weeks ago, Bloomberg published a damning piece about how the DCI Group, a D.C.-based consulting firm, creates phony echo chambers to help push its clients' interests. Tweets: @thesixler , @profcarroll , @medvidekpu , and @russellbrandom Tweets: @thesixler : This is a great tool to roll out after you've been accused by congress of not doing enough to protect your website from being an attack vector for cyber terrorism http://twitter.com/... David Carroll / @profcarroll : Twitter Ads has a weird feature that lets untraceable groups run political ads without being attached to a Twitter profile. Be sure to screenshot and post any #AdsWithoutProfiles you come across in your feeds. What about ads transparency? http://splinternews.com/... @medvidekpu : @Techmeme @libbycwatson The same works in Instagram btw. And on any display/ppc advertigins system. Obscurring bankrollers is also possible with intermediary. Nobody can be sure of ads origin and this is valid for years. Russell Brandom / @russellbrandom : This is a really good look at the lack of ad transparency on Twitter. (It goes without saying that everything is as bad or worse on Facebook.) https://splinternews.com/...
