APK teardown suggests Google may be preparing to launch an Android Messages web interface, enabling texting from the desktop

There's a new version of Android Messages rolling out to our phones.  So far, we haven't seen any significant changes to the UI, but huge things are happening under the surface.

Google has cycled through messaging bets before — back in 2015 it was reportedly building a chatbot-driven messaging app with AI answers, a strategy that never became the default. Android Messages, by contrast, started as a plain SMS client, and this teardown suggests Google is now turning it into something more: an app with a web companion that follows the user to the desktop.

The timing matters because the code was already sitting in a shipping APK — within months Google confirmed the direction by rolling out the actual web interface, making this teardown an early look at what became the app's defining feature.

  • Android users gain desktop texting through a browser session paired to their phone, removing the need to reach for the device to reply to messages.
  • Google gets a reason for users to keep Android Messages installed and signed in rather than treating it as a disposable SMS app.
