Instagram announces plan to bring Carousel Ads to Stories, letting advertisers show up to three photos or videos in Stories

Context & Ripple Effects

Instagram has been building toward this merge for years: it introduced multi-photo carousel ads with clickable links back in 2015, extended the swipe-through format to video in 2016, and then opened carousel posts of up to ten items to all users in early 2017. Meanwhile, Stories went from launch to a monetized surface within months, with full-screen, skippable ads arriving when the feature hit 150M daily users in January 2017.

Bringing Carousel Ads to Stories closes the loop: the two most successful ad and posting formats Instagram has developed are now one product, giving advertisers a multi-slide canvas inside the surface where user attention has visibly migrated.

First-order effects

  • Advertisers gain a new Stories placement carrying up to three photos or videos per unit, letting them reuse or adapt multi-slide creative they already build for feed carousels instead of compressing campaigns into a single frame.

Second-order effects

  • As Stories accumulates richer ad formats, budget pressure builds on Instagram's own feed inventory — advertisers now have two competing internal surfaces, and pricing power shifts toward whichever delivers better swipe-through engagement.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, every proven feed ad format eventually gets ported into Stories, completing Stories' evolution from a Snapchat-style feature clone into Instagram's primary monetization surface.

The trend: Instagram is systematically converting its mature feed advertising products into Stories, turning the younger surface from an experiment into the core of its ad business.
