The groundwork for this was laid months earlier, when Amazon and Microsoft partnered to let the two assistants summon each other — an unusual truce that positioned Alexa and Cortana as collaborators rather than pure rivals. With HP, Asus, and Acer now committing to ship Alexa inside Windows 10 desktops and notebooks, that partnership is turning into real shelf presence: Amazon gets distribution on the PC it could never earn through Echo alone.

The plan moved fast. By spring, Acer had begun pre-installing Alexa across its lineup, starting with Spin 5 laptops, converting the January announcement into shipping product, and by 2019 Microsoft went further with a Windows 10 update allowing voice assistants to activate right from the lock screen.

  • PC makers gain a voice-assistant differentiator for Windows 10 hardware without building one themselves, while Cortana loses its guaranteed position as the only assistant on the machines it ships with.
