This study quantifies what earlier coverage only sketched: the top editor who spent 47K edits fixing one phrase and the finding that Wikipedia moderates its own contributors both hinted that a small, self-selecting core does most of the work. The new numbers make the dependency explicit — 77% of content from 1% of editors over a decade of 250M edits.

The churn figure is the sharper half of the story: roughly 40% of that top 1% exits every five weeks, meaning the site's output rests on a constantly rotating handful of people. That sits uneasily beside earlier reporting on PR-paid editors filling the vacuum left by dwindling volunteers.
