Plex adds personalized, ad-supported news hub to its media player after its acquisition of news video startup Watchup

Media player software maker Plex is today making good on its acquisition of streaming news startup Watchup from earlier this year with the integration of a dedicated news hub within its app.

TechCrunch Sarah Perez

Context & Ripple Effects

This closes the loop on Plex's January acquisition of Watchup, which had been slated to ship in Q2 2017 — the news hub lands a quarter late but delivers on the deal's stated plan to fold streaming news into the Plex app. The integration matters because it marks Plex's first move beyond organizing users' personal libraries toward serving content itself.

The arc since then runs one direction: by early 2019 Plex was reportedly in talks to add ad-supported movies and premium subscriptions, positioning itself against the Roku Channel and Amazon Prime Video Channels, and later that year confirmed plans for an ad-supported streaming service with subscription reselling and transactional VOD. The Watchup-powered news hub is the earliest data point in that pivot from player to platform.

First-order effects

  • Plex's user base gets a dedicated, personalized news destination inside an app they already open daily — no new install required — while Watchup's technology finally reaches scale inside Plex rather than as a standalone startup.

Second-order effects

  • An ad-supported surface inside Plex gives the company its first inventory to sell beyond Plex Pass subscriptions, building the ad business it would need for the free streaming service and channel-reselling ambitions it pursued two years later.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, media players that once only organized local files become ad-funded aggregators competing with device makers' own channels — shifting value from library management software toward whoever controls discovery and monetization.

The trend: Media player apps are evolving from personal-library tools into ad-supported content platforms, with Plex's Watchup integration as an early step in that industry-wide pivot.
