Equifax breach exposes the problems with using social security numbers as a unique identifiers in the digital age

The Equifax disclosure that up to 143M Americans' names, birthdates, and Social Security numbers leaked lands on top of a warning the industry had already received: as far back as 2015, coverage of the Anthem and government breaches flagged that birthdate, name, and SSN remain integral to identity across many systems, making those records an indefinite future-harm liability rather than a one-time loss.

What makes this breach different is scale and source: roughly 44% of the US population had its core identity credentials held by a single credit bureau whose business model is aggregating exactly this data — a strategy reporting later tied directly to the blast radius of the company's maximum-data-collection approach.

  • Up to 143M consumers now carry lifetime identity-theft exposure because SSNs cannot be reissued like a card number, and Equifax's slow investigation — which drew DOJ concern — compounds the trust damage to all three credit bureaus.
