Microsoft is officially unveiling Windows 10 Pro for Workstations today.  While the operating system was originally rumored back in June, Microsoft is providing the full details on the special edition today.

The June leak of a 'Pro for Advanced PCs' edition previewed what Microsoft has now made official: a Windows 10 tier built for server-grade desktop hardware rather than the mainstream PC. The confirmation adds the specifics the rumor lacked — ReFS enabled by default, support for up to 4 CPUs and 6TB of RAM, persistent memory, and SMB Direct — with a fall shipping window.

The move matters because it extends Windows beyond its traditional ceiling: until now, buyers of extreme-core-count, large-memory workstations had little reason to stay on Windows when the OS capped their hardware. It also lands just ahead of Microsoft's fall hardware push, which per reporting includes a Surface all-in-one codenamed 'Cardinal' at a late-October event.
