HomeKit launched as one of the most gated smart-home platforms: back in 2015, Apple kept out unlicensed devices entirely, leaving popular WiFi gear like the Nest thermostat incompatible because it wasn't an MFi-licensed accessory. By mid-2017 Apple was visibly trying to fix that perception — it had just put HomeKit demos on the floor of its stores worldwide, letting shoppers control a Philips Hue bulb from the Home app (worldwide retail showcases).
