Latest version of Google's experimental browser Chrome Canary on Android includes setting to block “intrusive” ads

Google will reportedly debut a built-in ad blocking feature for its Chrome browser next year, and now we have the first concrete look at this addition to the web navigation software in action.

The Canary build is the first executable evidence of a plan that has been building all year: sources reported in April that Google was preparing ad-blocking for Chrome, and in June the company committed to preinstalling an ad filter in early 2018 keyed to the Coalition for Better Ads' standards. Shipping the toggle in Chrome Canary on Android moves that pledge from announcement to code.

Why it matters: Chrome is the distribution point for most of the web's advertising, so a blocking switch built into the browser itself — rather than left to extensions — puts Google in the position of enforcing which ad formats survive.
