Box Elements is the third act in a platform push that began with the Developer Edition for third-party enterprise apps in 2015 and continued with Box Platform's services and 3D viewer that fall. Where those moves opened Box's APIs, Elements packages the same capabilities as pre-built components — a bet that developers will adopt faster when integration is assembly rather than construction.
The timing matters because the developer-platform template was already proven elsewhere: Salesforce had consolidated its developer resources under App Cloud two years earlier, and Box's storage partnership with Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides showed the company willing to live inside other vendors' surfaces.
