This deal formalizes what was already underway: Nvidia and Baidu had been building a joint AI platform for self-driving cars since September 2016, and just one day earlier Baidu folded Nvidia into its 50-plus-partner Apollo alliance alongside Ford, Bosch, Microsoft Cloud, and twelve Chinese carmakers. Today's announcement widens that from cars to cloud infrastructure and home-assistant technology.

The scope matters because it makes Nvidia a supplier across three of Baidu's businesses at once — the same playbook Nvidia ran with Bosch's driver-assistant platform for Western automakers and would extend months later through its AI acceleration software push with Huawei, Lenovo, Alibaba, and Tencent in Chinese cloud.
