DeepMind has been testing how far it can stretch beyond its London base: six months ago it began hiring a couple of dozen people onto Google's Mountain View campus, but that was satellite staffing inside an existing Google site, not a lab of its own. DeepMind is effectively cashing in on that pipeline, though by hiring professors outright it revives the brain-drain worry the strategy was meant to defuse.
