Vivo demos Qualcomm's new ultrasonic fingerprint sensors that work under glass, metal, and water; commercial devices using them are expected in 2018

There have been rumours of Apple exploring under-display fingerprint scanning technology, but you probably didn't expect the first of such demos to come from China.

This demo lands between two earlier markers in the coverage: Qualcomm had already pitched ultrasound biometrics with its Snapdragon Sense ID sensor in 2015, and Synaptics countered with optical sensors that work under glass six months prior. What changed here is that a phone maker, not a component supplier, put the technology on stage — with commercial devices promised for 2018.

The framing matters because Apple was the presumed pioneer of under-display fingerprint scanning. A Chinese OEM demoing it first reset assumptions about where display-integrated biometrics would ship, and the promise held: Vivo's X20 Plus UD became the first in-display fingerprint phone in January 2018, followed by Qualcomm's 3D Sonic Sensor branding and the Galaxy S10 integration.

  • Qualcomm converts its Sense ID research into a demoed product path with a named launch customer, while Vivo gains a shot at being first to market with an in-display reader.
