YouTube has been building its 360° catalog since it first supported the format for headset-free viewers back in 2015, and rival Vimeo followed with web and mobile 360° support in March. What was missing was any way for creators to know whether viewers actually turned their heads — until now.

The heatmap tool answers that with a striking number: 75% of viewing time is spent on just the front 90 degrees of a 360° frame. That finding lands days before Google's VR180 standard announcement with Yi, Lenovo, and LG, which effectively concedes half the sphere — making the gaze data look less like a curiosity and more like the evidence base for a format pivot.
