Spinnaker started as Netflix's internally built deployment tool, open-sourced in late 2015 with support for AWS, Google Cloud Platform, Cloud Foundry, and Azure on the roadmap. Google putting a formal 1.0 stamp on it two years later is the same playbook it ran with Kubernetes, which it donated to the CNCF the moment Kubernetes hit 1.0 — shepherd the neutral layer, then monetize the managed services around it.
