Microsoft Garage launches Your News, a curated news app for Xbox One that streams personalized content from MSN

Context & Ripple Effects

This is one stop in Microsoft's long experiment with algorithmic news curation. A year earlier, Microsoft Garage updated News Pro with group discussions and a recommendation bot driven by text input or even a selfie; Your News now carries the same personalization idea onto the television, streaming curated MSN content through the Xbox One.

The timing matters because the Xbox One is Microsoft's weakest major surface — court documents put its ~58.5M sales at roughly half the PlayStation 4's 117.2M — so every new non-gaming use for the console is an attempt to raise engagement on installed hardware. The line continued after this launch: MSN was rebranded as Microsoft News across Android, iOS, Windows 10, Skype, Xbox, and Outlook.com, before everything was folded into Microsoft Start.

First-order effects

  • Xbox One owners gain a personalized news feed on the console itself, giving MSN a living-room distribution surface it did not previously have.
  • Microsoft Garage adds another shipped experiment to its incubator track record, alongside News Pro and the Arrow Launcher for Android.

Second-order effects

  • The proliferation of separate news apps (News Pro, Your News) creates overlap that Microsoft resolves by consolidation — first under the Microsoft News brand, then under Microsoft Start — rather than maintaining parallel products.
  • Automated curation at scale raises editorial stakes for MSN, which had already published a wrong image of a mixed-race Little Mix member when AI editing replaced human editors, and instructed staff to delete articles about the mix-up if the AI resurfaced them.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, Microsoft's news strategy converges on a single personalization engine distributed across every owned surface — web, Windows, mobile, Edge, and Xbox — with individual apps serving as temporary test beds rather than long-term products.
  • Consoles drift further from pure gaming devices toward general media hubs, which matters most for the platform with the smaller install base trying to extract more value per unit sold.

The trend: Microsoft is iterating experimental, personalized news apps in the Garage and consolidating them into one feed that spans every platform it controls.
