Wikimedia finished switching all of its sites to HTTPS by default in 2015, and within months the aborted Wikipedia ban in Russia showed why encryption matters for censorship: a government that can no longer read which pages a user requests must either allow the whole site or block it entirely. The Harvard study reported here is the first systematic confirmation that this trade-off deters censors in practice.

The finding lands mid-way through the web's broader encryption shift — by early 2017, EFF counted half of all web traffic as encrypted — and two years before Wikipedia's role as the web's factual backbone drew direct political attack from governments and political movements.
