This Q1 report extends the run Tencent started when it beat Q2 estimates last August with revenue up 52% and mobile gaming revenue doubling — two consecutive quarters above 50% growth confirm mobile games and online advertising as the engine, not just a rebound quarter.

The more important number for the arc ahead is WeChat at 937M users: it is still compounding now, but the same franchise later shows MAU growth of just 5% to 1.21B by late 2020, which is why the mix shift toward monetizing existing users matters more than the headline growth rate.

The trend: Tencent is transitioning from a user-growth story to a per-user monetization story, with WeChat evolving from a messaging network into the advertising and game-distribution rail of the Chinese internet.
